On May 17, Xi’an Fanyi University held a science popularization lecture on the theme of “Inheriting Excellent Traditional Chinese Culture—Shaanxi Culture” in the Science Popularization Base of the Cultural Inheritance and Translation Experiencing Hall. The lecture was presided over by Wang Peng, associate professor from the School of Translation Studies. Wang Yajie, a teacher from the School of Translation Studies, gave the lecture entitled “Rattan Weaving, an Intangible Cultural Heritage in Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province—Chang’an Selected Lecture”. The lecture was well-prepared, and the teacher and students interacted actively during the lecture.

Wang Yajie explained in detail “Hanzhong Rattan Weaving” as a folk handicraft in southern Shaanxi, as well as its translation. “Hanzhong Rattan Weaving” was listed as China Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021. Hanzhong Rattan Weaving is mainly hand-woven. It has a long history and has been handed down for more than a thousand years. It uses rattan, bamboo, or wood as raw materials to weave various utensils or handicrafts. The products are natural, environment-friendly, tough, light, durable, elegant, simple, and comfortable. Rattan weaving generally goes through more than a dozen processes. Various weaving techniques are used to create objects with only rattan or rattan and bamboo.

Since the establishment of the Science Popularization Base of the Cultural Inheritance and Translation Experiencing Hall, under the guidance of Education Department of Shaanxi Provincial Government and Shaanxi Federation of Social Sciences Circles, all the staff of the base have made unremitting efforts and worked together to continuously promote the highlights of Shaanxi local culture, which has been strongly supported by the Department of Scientific Research and the School of Translation Studies of Xi’an Fanyi University. They actively responded to the call of President Xi Jinping to “tell Chinese stories well”, and made contributions to promoting the communication and dissemination of Shaanxi culture and world culture.
